At Splattenridden we milk a herd of 300 crossbred cows grazing grass for a minimum of 9 months per year, utilising home grown forage in the winter months.
Crossing breeds produces a healthy cow with good hybrid vigour and the best traits from both breeds are combined to produce a superior, more efficient cow – such as feed efficiency, high milk solids, excellent fertility and calving ease.
AUTUMN-CALVING SYSTEM
We use an Autumn-calving system. The systems allows for calving outdoors, at a more favourable time or year.
Outdoor calving has many benefits, the main one being health. It also means our weaned heifers are better able to utilise the grass.
FRESH MILK AND CHEDDAR SUPPLY
The combination of crossbred cattle and the favourable, autumn calving systems means our cows and are able to produce the highest quality of fresh milk.
This fresh milk is then used to make Cathedral Chedder at Davidstow.
